The "Wings of Wonder: Sulawesi Birding Retreat" took place from July 8th to 16th, 2023, in the enchanting landscapes of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The tour provided a captivating journey through the diverse habitats of the region, offering our guests a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich avian biodiversity of Sulawesi.

Day 1: Arrival in Manado - Tangkoko
The tour commenced with the group convening at Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado. Nestled along the Bay of Manado, this vibrant city served as the gateway to our adventure. Our first destination was the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, where we were greeted by the mesmerizing calls of resident bird species. Notable sightings included the elusive Spectral Tarsier and the charismatic Celebes Crested Macaque.

Day 2-3: Tangkoko Nature Reserve
Two full days were dedicated to exploring the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, an area spanning over 8,700 hectares, encompassing three majestic mountains. This reserve proved to be a treasure trove of biodiversity, housing numerous endemic species. Among the highlights were encounters with the Green-backed Kingfisher, Sulawesi Lilac Kingfisher, and the elusive Finch-billed Myna.

Day 4: Temboan Hill - Mangrove
The day started with an early visit to Temboan Hill, offering captivating views and memorable birdwatching experiences. We were fortunate to observe the resplendent Green Imperial Pigeon and the striking Sulawesi Hanging Parrot. Later in the day, our expedition through the mangrove forest by outrigger canoe was equally rewarding, with sightings of the regal Great-billed Kingfisher and the graceful White-rumped Cuckooshrike.

Day 5: Tomohon - Minahasa Highland
The adventure continued with an exploration of the Mount Mahawu Protected Forest. This verdant volcano, with its emerald-green lake, provided a picturesque backdrop for our birdwatching activities. Highlights included the Scaly-breasted Kingfisher and the vibrant Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher. Gardenia Restaurant offered a delightful setting for lunch and more birdwatching, with sightings of the Sulawesi Myzomela and the charming Collared Kingfisher.

Day 6: Tomohon to Kotamobagu
The day started with a visit to Linow Lake, where we were treated to sightings of the Oriental Darter and the graceful Purple Heron. A scenic drive led us to Kotamobagu, where the quest for avian wonders continued. A highlight was the encounter with the enigmatic Sulawesi Masked Owl.

Day 7: Kotamobagu to Boganani National Park
Our journey took us to Tambun, where the Maleo Sanctuary awaited. Here, we marveled at the unique Maleo and other avian treasures, including the Sulawesi Serpent Eagle and Sulawesi Pygmy Hanging Parrot. The day concluded with a return to Kotamobagu, accompanied by more birdwatching discoveries.

Day 8: Manado
En route to Manado, our birdwatching endeavors persisted, providing additional opportunities to observe Sulawesi's avian wonders. The day concluded with a comfortable stay in Manado.

Day 9: Manado to Sam Ratulangi Airport
The final day of the retreat saw us departing from Manado, bidding farewell to the picturesque landscapes and the remarkable avian life of Sulawesi.

The tour was exceptional, providing a rich variety of birding experiences across Sulawesi's diverse habitats. Guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, enhancing the overall birding experience. Accommodations were comfortable, and transportation was efficient. The inclusion of meals, especially at Gardenia Restaurant, was well-received. The focus on endemic Sulawesi bird species for bird photography enthusiasts was appreciated. The mangrove canoe expedition was a unique highlight. To enhance future tours, consider providing weather reminders, incorporating educational components, and having contingency plans for unforeseen circumstances. Optional cultural experiences could also enrich the trip. Providing post-tour resources would be a valuable addition for participants. Overall, the tour successfully connected guests with Sulawesi's avian wonders, leaving a positive impression.
